SOTU: US Needs Advanced Manufacturing Policy

In his State of the Union address, President Obama noted that "American manufacturers are hiring again." While we applaud the administration's affirmation of the importance of manufacturing, a reality check is necessary. Yes, manufacturing has rebounded slightly from the depths of the recession, but much more work needs to be done to ensure U.S. manufacturing competitiveness in the 21st century. To create a new era of advanced manufacturing in America, the government must go beyond tax incentives to "bring manufacturing back," and increase its investments in next-generation manufacturing technology and the advanced technology industries that will lead the 21st century global economy.
