Ariel is a historian of policy and political economy at Southern Methodist University. When not working on the politics of alternative proteins, he can be found deep in the nineteenth century. He has held fellowships at Yale, Cornell, and the Library of Congress, and his book, Grassroots Leviathan: Agricultural Reform and the Rural North in the Slaveholding Republic, won best-book awards from the Agricultural History Society and Center for Civil War Research.
