Radiological Health Expert

Breakthrough is seeking a radiological health expert to join its Nuclear Energy Innovation program. This expert will contribute to Breakthrough’s mission of modernizing nuclear energy regulation in the United States, specifically by making the case for an evidence-based framework for establishing radiological health standards at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. This role requires a deep understanding of radiation physics, health risks, and safety regulations.

Activities

● Provide expert information on radiation safety and historical impacts associated with nuclear energy; speak at public events to inform and educate the public and key stakeholders on radiation safety

● Inform regulatory rulemaking, guidance, and oversight for nuclear energy, particularly related to radiation safety, dose thresholds, and risk

● Advance foundational research in low-dose radiation risk and the use of a linear no-threshold dose-response model for regulation of nuclear power and fuel cycle facilities

Qualifications

● Advanced degree in health physics, nuclear engineering, or a related field.

● Extensive experience in radiation safety, including program development, risk assessment, and regulatory compliance.

● Strong knowledge of radiation physics, health effects, and safety regulations.

● Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.

● Effective communication and interpersonal skills.

● Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Additional Requirements

● Certified Health Physicist (CHP) certification is preferred.

● Experience working in a regulated environment, such as a nuclear power plant or medical facility.

● Familiarity with radiation detection and measurement equipment.

● Proficiency in computer software for data analysis and reporting.
