Sunjoy Joshi has been heading the Observer Research Foundation New Delhi as its Director since 2009. His own field of work remains in energy and environment. Sunjoy writes and comments on strategic issues related to India’s energy needs and their interplay with the country’s development challenges in the context of the contemporary climate change narrative. He began his career with the Government of India as a member of the Indian Administrative Service in 1983, and served in various capacities for 25 years before he left to pursue his primary interests in energy and environment. He handled oil and gas exploration as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas and has been Director of the Board of National Energy Companies such as ONGC, OVL, OIL and MRPL. Sunjoy has wide experience in administering fiscal and contractual regimes for oil and gas. He was the Founding Mission Director for the Watershed Development Mission and subsequently, Managing Director of the Renewable Energy Development Agency in the State of Madhya Pradesh. His experience of policy making and implementation cuts across the conventional as well as non-conventional energy sectors and covers issues related to water use, and its conservation and management. He has been Visiting Associate at the International Institute of Strategic Studies, London and Distinguished Visitor to the Program on Energy and Sustainable Development, University of Stanford. Sunjoy takes keen interest in social development and is Vice President of the Mountain Children’s Foundation.
