Radiological Health Analyst at the Breakthrough Institute
Peter James (PJ) Seel is the Radiological Health Analyst at the Breakthrough Institute’s Washington, DC office. He applies his expertise in nuclear physics, biomedical sciences, and occupational health to advocate for the modernization of nuclear safety standards and the advancement of peaceful nuclear technologies.
Prior to joining the Breakthrough Institute, PJ served as an Associate Research Scientist at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Monaco, where he analyzed natural and artificial radionuclides to study hydrologic flow and ecological change. His work involved extensive field sampling, laboratory analysis, contributions to monitoring programs around the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, and engagement with diplomatic staff from multiple member states.
PJ holds a Master of Science in Health Physics, along with dual Bachelor of Science degrees in Biomedical Sciences and Environmental Health, from Colorado State University
PJ has also contributed to research in food safety, antibiotic resistance, pollinator insect protection, sustainable agriculture, biomolecular physics, cellular imaging, and public health initiatives. In his free time, he enjoys traveling, hiking, and making meals for friends and family.
