Jonah Messinger is a non-resident Senior Energy Analyst at the Breakthrough Institute, where he studies fusion technology and policy. He is also a Winton Scholar and Ph.D. student at the Cavendish Laboratory of Physics at the University of Cambridge. Jonah’s research applies atomic, solid-state, and quantum physics methods to develop novel technologies that harness the energy of the nucleus.
Jonah’s research interests extend to clean energy innovation, science and technology policy, and energy for development. His experience spans scientific laboratories, clean energy firms, and policy research institutions.
Jonah’s work has appeared in Columbia University’s Energizing America, Advanced Energy Materials, ACS Energy Letters, Utility Dive, the ETH Zürich Energy Blog, Light: Science & Applications – Nature, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, and more.
Prior to joining the Breakthrough Institute as a Generation Fellow, Jonah was a Visiting Scientist and ThinkSwiss Scholar at ETH Zürich. He is also a One Young World Ambassador.
A Udall Scholar, Jonah earned his Master’s in Energy and Bachelor’s in Physics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and was named to its Senior 100 Honorary.
